New York City got its famous nickname from the prizes (Big Apples) awarded at racing courses in the 1920s.
The city officially adopted the moniker in 1971 at the end of a successful ad campaign to attract tourists. New York City has other nicknames, including Gotham, Empire City, and the city that never sleeps.
